What every player needs to know

PREDICTABILITY

So, after our harping on about discipline, playing good cards, and exhibiting patience, we should also point out that being predictable will make other players fold to your raises and avoid the few situations in which you are playing a strong hand. (Remember, they are watching you too!).

Agressively playing the occasional suited connector(e.g 8c-7c)can leave your opponents guessing, particularly if the flop gives you the strongest hand. This is even the case if the flop is 6-9-2, giving you the open-ended straight draw where you have at least eight outs(four 5s or four 10s could potentially be in the deck-giving you a roughly 30% shot of hitting the likely winning hand). If you expose this hand in a showdown, your opponents will now know that you don't just play high pairs or A-K options, and that will make you harder to predict.

PRE-FLOP, POST-FLOP

PRE-FLOP
The size of the pot usually dictates the level of your bet or raise. In early position, a bet of 75% to 125% of the pot value will scare off most limpers, and is probably low enough for you to bail without serious injury to your stack if you're re-raised by a player in late position. (In that re-raise situation, unless you're reading a bluff or you have a great hand of your own, it's okay to bail out and fight another day!)
In late position, raising or re-raising from three to six times the amount of the pot will spell that you're serious and should cause most weaker hands to fold (and is therefore a potentially effective bluff/semi-bluff tactic).

POST-FLOP
In 10-player games, where your strategy should be tight, don't call with medium-strength hands. Unless you strongly suspect a bluff or the player is clearly on tilt (playing emotionally due to a recent bad beat, for example), maintaining your discipline and folding to a strong bet will pay off even if you're holding bottom or middle pair.

POKER HAND RANKINGS

LIMPING

Beginning players will often contribute to pots by limping (straight calling a bet) into hands just to play them, or "just to see" You are better off deciding whether your hand and position warrant a raise. If not , strongly consider folding and waiting for the next hand. You may hit a good flop after limping, but if three or more other players do, to , odds or you won't have the best hand.

When you dump J-2 offsuit and the flop is J-J-2, you might kick yourself for not being in the pot with your boat and the chance for a big payoff. But more often than not,a J-2 call will result in a quick fold to a stronger hand and a wasted cotribution to the pot. Even in late position, hands such as A-3 offsuit and K-5 suited are not strong plays. Sure, the flop might bring 2-4-5 or three of your suit, but the odds are definitely against it. Of course, an Ace is great to have in the hole as a strong kicker, but it is weak if the flop does not yield a second Ace.

REMEMBER:YOU CAN'T LOSE IF YOU DON'T GO ALL-IN

Be sure of that call or raise before you go all-inin No Limit games-lose the hand, and you don't even win bus fare home. Going all-in can be a powerful tool in your arsenal for an aggressive play, but it is a decision that should be made with careful thought of all the angles and potential pitfalls.

If you feel like you've be bullied in ads on which you flopped, say, a nut flush, try a different tactic: Using a slow play to see who's calling your action can build the pot before an all-in move on the river. Beeing pot-committed-where so many of your chips are in the hand taht the only real option is to push ahead and hope for the best- is a bad place to find yourself. Unless you're convinced that when the dealer pushes the chips they'll be haeded in your direction, don't overextend your bankroll.

At the poker table , medals are not awarded for valiant service in the face of enemy fire: Take the fleshwound and fight another day!

Know your game/Know the other guy's games

If you are in a cardroom or playing online, don't just dive into a table's action:

- Take a seat and wait for the big blind to come your way before playing.

- Use that time to watch the other players and see if you can spot early signs of agressive or loose players (those who are betting or raising on every hand, particularly if they are taken to a showdown and have a weak hand), and definitely try to identify the weakest players at the table.

What every poker players needs to know - part II

PATIENCE

Closely related to discipline, it is easy to let your attention stray when you go through a spell of hands such as 7-2 offsuit, 10-2 suited, and J-4 offsuit.(which you will-often).

Staying focused means that your attention is on the game, and the hands you are not in are a chance to learn more about your opponents.
It is conceivable, especially in slow-moving live games, that you could spend up to an hour folding poor hands.

K-7 offsuit is still a poor hand to play in early position, regardless of how long it's been since you saw the last face card.

What every player needs to know

Virtually every piece of poker advice you read or hear can prove valuable: talking about strategy, thinking about it, observing hands, and swapping stories all contribute to your knowledge base. With so much information, we are offering a filter that hits all the main points you need to consider in your poker playing. Sticking to these rules and adhering to the pointers will see you right in the long run.

DISCIPLINE

1- Don't play too many hands. Know when to fold'em.
2- Don't be bullied by bigger stacks or agressive players. Know when to hold'em.
3- Dont't plan a quick-fix short play session and play over-aggresively in the hope of fast gains.
4- Avoid committing too much to a hand where your potential gains are minimal compared to the risk.
5- Don't just play the cards: Observe your opponents.
6- Don't play hands while on tilit. Stab a fork in your leg first !
